Margo,
great report on the no-debating going on by the prohibitionists…wanted you to know about LAW Enforcement Against Prohibition, an org comprised of cops, judges, prosecutors, prison wrdens and others in the criminal justice system, as well as concerned citizens, who call for an end to the War on Drugs. Provocative grp of speakers take the msg to the public on a daily basis, talking to civic grps, church congregations, senir citizens, students, vets and others to explain the failure of this policy. And it sells.

The non-debating was on the part of Mr. Hager, not Mr. Stutman, who cannot help non-debating because no logical case for his position exists.

Repeat a message often enough, and it becomes gospel. whether it is his intent or not, Mr. Hager is helping to perpetuate drug war myths.

The real “Great Debate” already has a clear winnerand he blows it, perhaps even on purpose!

I know all about LEAP, and it doesn’t suprise me one bit that such an organization exists. What better witnesses are there to the tragedies of the war on drugs than those who have been on its front lines?

Does leap have an affiliation with the booking agency mentioned in the above article?

Ms. Toigo, I can’t thank you enough for your incisive dissection of one of the main problems the drug law reform movement faces in the prohibitionist’s unwillingness to engage in true debate.

They have for decades been the recipients of taxpayer funded largesse, and have used it to propagandize that same taxpayer…in some of the most intellectually insulting fashions possible. Bad enough they did so; worst they wasted our money while they did it. A recent GAO report has stated that over a billion dollars have been spent doing so, with no appreciable effect, and recommended that the salaries of those doing the propagandizing, the ONDCP, be cut.

But compared to the decades of time lapsed and the hundreds of billions wasted (at least!) since 1981 in this ludicrous undeclared civil war, that’s comparative peanuts. With all the money they have extorted from us – under threat of prison for refusing to render under Caesar – they can’t find any time or money to schedule an actual debate?

The GAO recommendations don’t go far enough; promise of future appropriations should be tied to the requirement of holding public debates as to the effectiveness of drug policy. That would be the death-knell of drug prohibition in this country, as during those debates its’ racially bigoted origins would become common knowledge. Such revelations alone, either in a courtroom or in the arena of public opinion, would be enough to seal its’ fate.

Once again, many thanks!

Mr. Graeme,

The prohibitionists’ unwillingness to engage in true debate is only half the problem.

Unfortunately, the other half is reformers who do not know how to debate effectively. They allow themselves to be put on the defensive through the use of selfish assertions about the rights of the consumers of prohibited drugs, instead of arguing why drug policy reform is good for the whole of society.

Your case regarding how the drug war is a waste of the taxpayers’ money is an excellent example of the latter.

It’s easy to beat up on prohibitionists for their irrational support of prohibition. My intention is to beat up on reformers who either can’t or won’t debate to win when the other side’s position is untenable at best.
